The Database Administrator is responsible for working with management system software and insuring the availability and security of data. It is an area of the Information Technology field that has experienced explosive growth in the past decade. This field shares many of the same problems as almost every other area of the IT career field when considering the current job market. From the supply perspective, employers have been searching for college graduates for entry level positions in the Database Administrator field. In many cases, advanced degrees have been the minimum requirement. This approach has not met with total satisfaction. One of the reasons for this is the rapid advance of technology within the IT field and the increasing integration of the Internet into the business sphere. This has created a situation where traditional educational curriculum has tended to lag behind technological development. The result has been highly educated by vastly inexperienced managers. Many employers have begun to look more to experience and to Certification programs such as the Oracle Certification program to find applicants who are more up to date with the current demands of the profession.
This same idea applies to potential Database Administrators as well. Oracle training that leads to Certification has become the accepted way to demonstrate competence in database management skills. The holder of an Oracle database administrator certification would often be seen as more prepared to step right into a job situation without extensive break in time. In the rapidly changing and highly competitive IT field, this is being seen as a necessity more often than not.
Although continued growth is expected in this field through 2007 and for the next decade, the growth is being slowed somewhat by the outsourcing of routine jobs overseas. How this impacts the job market is that it has created a gap between advanced management positions and entry level ones. This fact makes Certification and other advanced training even more essential as the opportunity to work your way up through the ranks in the Database Administration field might be disappearing overseas as well. Only well trained and certified technicians will be able to make the jump directly into the upper level positions and challenging positions.
